Allison Bartl, "101 Pep-up Games for Children: Refreshing, Recharging, Refocusing"Hunter House | 2007 | ISBN: 0897934954 | 160 pages | PDF | 4,8 MBChildren often find it difficult to make it through an entire day of structured activity — be it school, daycare, camp, or a boys/girls club. These games and activities are the remedy. Refocusing a child's mind after a long lesson or event, they re-energize youngsters and improve the mood of any group. Many incorporate call-and-response and improvisation, strengthening a child's cognitive skills while relieving fatigue and facilitating concentration. Each game requires only the children, a leader, and a heavy dose of enthusiasm — no props or preparation necessary! The book is clearly written and easy to follow, and its infectious sense of fun makes each of these activities the perfect antidote to late-afternoon weariness.file2boxuploading.commirrorNot all books on AvaxHome appear on the homepage. In order not to miss many of them follow ebooks section (see top of each page on AH)and visittoo :)NO MIRRORS according tothe rules

Brian P. Cleary, "Skin Like Milk, Hair of Silk: What Are Similes and Metaphors?"
Millbrook Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0822591510 | 32 pages | PDF | 6 MB
What Are Similes and Metaphors?
Are you as clever as a fox? Or perhaps you're as sharp as any spike? If so, this book will be a piece of cake! Clever rhymes from Brian P. Cleary and humorous illustrations from Brian Gable present similes and metaphors. When it comes to grammar, this team is not as slow as thick molasses. Oh no, they're as bright as polished pennies!
Each simile and metaphor is printed in color for easy identification in this gem of a book. Read it aloud and share in the delight of the sense--and nonsense--of words.
This is a vibrant, colorful book that will help even the most reluctant learner learn about figurative language!
Rating: 5
If you are as smart as a whip, this book will be as easy as pie and if you enjoy comparing things, you've come to the right place. The cats in this book are ready, willing and able to tell you all about similes and metaphors so you'd better pay attention. Similes compare things by using the words "like" or "as." The pink cat with the coveralls and a matching shirt a nd hair bow, has paused from her work to touch her pointer finger to one of the railroad spikes. She has a self-assured grin on her face because she knows "she's as sharp as any spike!"
Metaphors are a way to describe "something by calling it something else." If that sounds a bit ridiculous it won't by the time you get a few lessons from the cats in this book. They describe and compare things, but "don't use like or as." "Metaphors will often use an `is' or `has' or `are.' As in, you are my sunshine or this singer is a star!" Once you finish reading about similes and metaphors you'll be, like that smarty pants yellow cat, "as bright as polished pennies" and you'll be able to brag that you know all about them.
I love the few books I've read in the "Words Are CATegorical" series of books. The great rhyming scheme and the colorful cats will entice even the most reluctant reader and fascinate those who are as smart as a whip. This is an easy way for children to learn about figurative language. The vibrant and sometimes comical cats make the concepts easier to comprehend by presenting visuals. This is a book targeted to the youngster between the ages of seven and eleven. It is simple and doesn't talk about things like explicit or implied comparisons. I showed another in the series to a mother who wanted it for her nine-year-old. She said he LOVED it and wanted more! Can't get any better than that!

Heather Moehn, "World Holidays: A Watts Guide for Children"
Franklin Watts 2000 | ISBN-10: 0531117146 | 123 Pages | PDF | 8,5 MBThis useful resource presents more than 100 religious, cultural, and national holidays celebrated around the world. Alphabetically arranged, most of the entries run from one half to a full page while a few (Hanukkah, Lent, and Ramadan) are longer. A captioned full-color photograph helps to place each celebration in a cultural context. A section on calendars around the world and a five-year holiday calendar are appended. The many cross-references help children to see the similarities among holidays and cultures. Children Just Like Me: Celebrations! (DK, 1997) is more visually exciting and could possibly be used by younger students because of the visuals, but is not as comprehensive as this title.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NY
