Imperial Cults and the Apocalypse of John: Reading Revelation in the Ruins

Imperial Cults and the Apocalypse of John: Reading Revelation in the Ruins

Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0195131533 | edition 2001 | PDF | 304 pages | 11,2 mb

After more than a century of debate about the significance of imperial cults for the interpretation of Revelation, this is the first study to examine both the archaeological evidence and the Biblical text in depth. Friesen argues that a detailed analysis of imperial cults as they were practiced in the first century CE in the region where John was active allows us to understand John's criticism of his society's dominant values. He demonstrates the importance of imperial cults for society at the time when Revelation was written, and shows the ways in which John refuted imperial cosmology through his use of vision, myth, and eschatological expectation.

Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church

October 1st 2009 in Cultures

Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the ChurchPublisher: HarperOne | ISBN: 0061551821 | edition 2008 | PDF | 352 pages | 13,4 mbWright, one of the greatest, and certainly most prolific, Bible scholars in the world, will touch a nerve with this book. What happens when we die? How should we think about heaven, hell, purgatory and eternal life? Wright critiques the views of heaven that have become regnant in Western culture, especially the assumption of the continuance of the soul after death in a sort of blissful non-bodily existence. This is simply not Christian teaching, Wright insists. The New Testament's clear witness is to the resurrection of the body, not the migration of the soul. And not right away, but only when Jesus returns in judgment and glory. The "paradise," the experience of being "with Christ" spoken of occasionally in the scriptures, is a period of waiting for this return. My Filemirror1mirror2mirror3To thank me use my , please!!!! William Shakespeare, "The Taming of the Shrew" (The New Cambridge Shakespeare, Updated Edition)Edited by Ann ThompsonCambridge University Press | 2003 | ISBN: 0521532493 | 212 pages | siPDF | 5.6 MBOne of Shakespeare's most popular yet controversial plays, this edition of The Taming of the Shrew considers its reception in the light of the hostility and embarrassment it often arouses, taking account of both scholarly defences and modern feminist criticism of the play. For this updated edition Ann Thompson has added new sections to the Introduction which describe the 'deeply problematic' nature of debates about the play and its reception since the 1980s. She discusses recent editions and textual, performance and critical studies.About The New Cambridge Shakespeare SeriesThe New Cambridge Shakespeare is an edition of Shakespeare's works, consisting of a separate volume for each play, and a volume each for the Sonnets and the narrative poems. Slavoj Žižek: live theory By Rex Butler

Slavoj Žižek: live theoryBy Rex Butler

Continuum | 2005 | ISBN 0826469957 | 165 Pages | PDF OCR or DJVU OCR | 7.8 MB or 2.3 MB

Slavoj Zizek is undoubtedly one of the world's leading cultural critics. His witty, psychoanalytically-inspired analyses of contemporary society have almost single-handedly revived the notion of ideology. His brilliant commentaries on the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and the 19th century German Idealists have brought alive their often difficult ideas for a new generation of readers. But does Zizek have anything to say in his own right? Is there a system of thought that we can properly call "Zizekian"? This book argues that there is, through a reading of two terms in his work - the master-signifier and the act. Featuring an interview with Zizek himself, Slavoj Zizek: Live Theory presents a snapshot of the Zizek system ideal for undergraduates in social and cultural theory and philosophy.

Michel Foucault, Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique

September 30th 2009 in Cultures

Rapidshare | HotfilePlease add more mirrors
